Baseball Settles For Split At CSU Monterey Bay

Ian Bridges blasted his second home run of the year on Saturday
SEASIDE, Calif-  Sonoma State picked up an 8-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, only to see the Otters come back for a 6-3 win in the nightcap in Seaside.  The loss snapped a 28-game winning streak for Sonoma over Monterey Bay.  The split leaves the Seawolves at 14-6, 7-6 CCAA while the Otters go to 6-22, 3-12 CCAA.

The Seawolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one thanks to a two-run single from Kyle Jones and a sac fly off the bat of Lee Stevens.  Another run in the third made it 4-0 before the Otters struck for three in the bottom of the inning.  Sonoma pushed across two more runs in the fourth on a two-run Leo Avila double, extending the lead to 6-3.  The teams would trade runs the rest of the way, setting the final margin at 8-5.

Taylor Lewis earned the win for the Seawolves after a solid 4 1/3-inning relief performance, improving to 3-0 on the year.  Casey Slate was the Sonoma starter, going 3 2/3 innings and giving up three runs.  Brian Flint shut the door in the ninth for his third save.

Kris Haycock, Avila, and Stevens each had two hits for the Seawolves.  Avila was also hit by two pitches, giving him nine free bases by way of hit batsmen in just 37 at bats this season.

In game two, the Seawolves again jumped out to the early lead, plating two in the first- one on an error by the Otter catcher and the other on a Ian Bridges solo homer.  The Otters did not back down, however, scoring two runs in each the third, fourth, and fifth.  The Seawolves would score one run in the seventh, but they'd leave the bases loaded with the go-ahead run at the plate.

Haycock  and Bridges both had two hits to lead the Seawolves' six-hit attack.  Haycock scored twice and hit a double.  Cameron Ray was roughed up for the first time this season, surrendering six runs in four innings to fall to 3-1 on the season.

The series concludes tomorrow with a single game at 11:00 am.
