Baseball Drops Opener At Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif-  Sonoma State dropped the opener of their four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona 14-7 on Friday afternoon at Scolinos Field in Pomona.  After falling behind early, the Seawolves scored six straight runs, only to see the Broncos put the game away at the end.  The loss snaps a five-game winning streak and drops the Seawolves' record to 19-7, 12-7 CCAA.

On Friday, the Seawolves found themselves in a gigantic hole after just two innings of play.  Trailing 11-1, the Seawolves surrendered more runs in the first two innings than they had in any contest in all of 2009.

In the fifth inning, the Seawolves showed a little life when they loaded the bases with nobody out before delivering three runs.  Things got more interesting the next inning when Kyle Jones smashed a three-run double to cut the gap to 11-7.

The Broncos would put the game on ice in the eighth when they scored three of their own to set the final margin at 14-7.

Jones would finish the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and five runs batted in.  Kris Haycock, Leo Avila, and Brian Wright also had two hits apiece in the Seawolves' 12-hit attack.

Cameron Ray was marked with the loss after an ugly one-inning start in which he allowed eight earned runs on six hits.  Alberto Rolon and Troy Brown also pitched in the series opening defeat.

The Seawolves and Broncos will continue their series on Saturday with a doubleheader.
