Softball Settles For Split With CSU Monterey Bay

Kayla Ledford's two-run single in the seventh led to SSU's win in game two
SEASIDE, Calif-  After dropping a 5-0 decision in the opener, Sonoma State charged back to a late-inning 3-2 victory in the nightcap to earn a split with Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon in Seaside.  The split leaves the Seawolves at 19-15, 10-11 CCAA while the Otters go to 17-19-1, 11-7 CCAA.

The day got off to a sour start as the Seawolves could manage just two hits in game one's 5-0 loss.  The Otters scored a run in the second, then put it away with two in the fifth and two in the sixth.  Lindsay Emmel picked up the loss, though she went the distance, giving up seven hits and five runs while striking out six.  Brittany Martinez had a double for Sonoma in the loss.

Up 2-1 with two outs in the seventh inning of game two, the Otters looked like they may be in line for a sweep.  However, just in the nick of time, the Seawolves' bats woke up.  After a Courtney James single, Janelle Arnold and Jessica Abelia both singled to load the bases for Kayla Ledford.  Ledford's single, the Seawolves' fourth straight with two outs in the seventh, forced home two runs, giving the Seawolves a 3-2 lead.  The Seawolves were able to escape a jam in the seventh when, with the bases loaded, Lucia Rodriguez flied into a double play.

Brittany Reynolds turned in a nice effort, striking out five and allowing seven hits over seven innings.  Ledford finished 3-for-4 on the day and Nicole Cordova also had a pair of hits.

The series concludes tomorrow with another doubleheader in Seaside.
