ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State came away with a pair of one-run victories over UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon in a CCAA baseball doubleheader at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park. The 30th-ranked Seawolves topped the 17th-ranked Tritons 2-1 and 3-2 to improve to 11-4, 4-4 CCAA. The Tritons drop to 10-6, 7-3 CCAA.
Game one was a classic pitcher's duel between Sonoma's
Gary Moran and UCSD's Tim Shibuya. Neither team could manage anything on offense until the sixth inning, when the Tritons finally pushed across a run off Moran on a two-out bases loaded walk to pinch hitter Nick Geach.
The Seawolves answered back in the seventh when
Cameron Cook singled home a run to tie it up. In the ninth, Cook again played the hero when he blasted a walk-off single to the wall to drive home the winning run.
Cook finished 2-for-4 in the opener and
Kris Haycock scored both of the Seawolves' runs.
Brian Flint picked up the win in relief, tossing 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief.
Tim Shibuya was charged with the game one loss, despite an excellent effort over 8 2/3 innings. Robert Sedin was responsible for two of UCSD's three hits.
Game two was another low-scoring affair, though the teams found their way to the scoreboard a lot earlier. UCSD went up 1-0 in the second on an RBI double off the bat of Matt Cantele. Sonoma would be quick to answer, plating a pair on an RBI fielder's choice from
Jonathan Lewis and then an RBI double from
Matt Campbell.
The Tritons tied the game at two in the top of the third when Josh Tanner produced a sacrifice fly to score Kellen Lee. The game would remain tied until the seventh when Sonoma got the game-winning run on a sac fly by
Jacob Fiss.
Cameron Ray got the start for the Seawolves and pitched well, striking out nine in seven innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. Flint, the game one winner, was credited with a save after working his way out of a jam in the ninth.
Matt Rossman was tagged with the loss in a 6 1/3 inning performance. Three Tritons- Vance Albitz, Evan Kehoe, and Cantele- had two hits for the Tritons. No Sonoma player had more than one hit.
The teams will conclude their series with another doubleheader tomorrow at 11:00 am. The games will be broadcast on
The Seawolf Sports Network.
