ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State split a doubleheader with UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon to earn a three games to one series win over the 17th-ranked Tritons. The Seawolves won game one 3-2 before dropping the nightcap by the same 3-2 score. The split leaves the Seawolves at 12-5, 5-5 CCAA while the Tritons go to 11-7, 8-4 CCAA.
All four of the games in the series were decided by one run, with the last three finishing in identical 3-2 scores.
For the third straight game in the series, the Tritons rolled to an early lead after a first-inning run in game one. Evan Kehoe supplied the damage with a run-scoring single to score Garrett Imeson. The Seawolves would tie things up in the third on a
Leo Avila single, then go ahead on a two-run double by
Kris Haycock. A single run by UCSD in the fifth pulled them to within one at 3-2, but that's where the score would stay as the Seawolves held on.
After a strong start from
Morgan Rodriguez,
Taylor Lewis took over, pitching four nearly flawless innings of relief to earn the win.
Brian Flint earned his second save in as many days by shutting down the Tritons in the ninth. Haycock and
Kyle Jones each had two hits to pace the Sonoma offense.
Kirby St. John was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. Imeson, Kehoe, and Tim Mort each had two hits and Kellen Lee blasted a home run.
In game two, the Tritons broke open a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Nick Geach lifted a solo home run to center field. The score would draw even in the bottom of the fifth on an Avila RBI single to plate
Matt Campbell. The teams would trade runs again in the sixth, this time on solo home runs as UCSD's Matt Cantele and Sonoma's
Kyle Jones would turn the trick. The difference maker came in the eighth inning when Robert Sedin delivered a bases loaded single.
Sonoma was shut down in the bottom of the eighth (it was a scheduled seven-inning contest) by Guido Knudson, the winning pitcher. Cantele finished the game 2-for-3 to lead the Tritons' six-hit attack.
Casey Slate pitched well for Sonoma, allowing just one run and two hits in 4 2/3 innings. Kenny Cook was charged with the loss in a 1 1/3 inning relief appearance.
Ian Bridges and Campbell each had two hits for Sonoma State.
The Seawolves return to action next weekend when they head to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay in a four-game series.
