ROHNERT PARK, Calif- It may have taken a while, but the Sonoma State offense finally got in gear on Friday as the Seawolves defeated Cal State San Bernardino 5-2 in the opener of a four-game CCAA series in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves improve to 27-11, 19-10 CCAA while the Coyotes drop to 18-17, 12-12 CCAA.
In an "un-Sonoma State-like performance", the Seawolves committed three errors and repeatedly came up empty with runners on, until the seventh inning when they finally broke through.
Sonoma got a very strong performance from
Gary Moran, though an error resulted in a run for San Bernardino in the third and it looked like Moran might be on the hook for an undeserved loss. The big right-hander went six innings, allowing six hits and no walks while striking out four.
Trailing 2-0, the Seawolves got all the run support they'd need in the seventh inning. After back-to-back singles by
Jonathan Lewis and
Ryan Averkieff led off the inning,
Joe Slater doubled off of the first base bag to plate one. A hit-by-pitch was then followed by back-to-back bases loaded walks to
Cameron Cook and
Kyle Jones to make the lead 3-2. The final run of the inning would come on a sacrifice fly from
Jacob Fiss.
The Seawolves would tack on one more run in the eighth inning on a
Danny Pignataro home run to left.
Taylor Lewis picked up his fifth victory of the season with a one-inning relief appearance.
Brian Flint pitched two perfect innings to record his fifth save of the season.
Daniel Stenavich was tagged with the loss after yielding nine hits and four runs in six innings.
The Seawolves and Coyotes will hit the field on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 am. The game will be carried on the Seawolf Sports Network.
