Baseball Completes Sweep With 1-0 Victory

Kendall Davis tossed five shutout innings on Sunday
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Danny Pignataro delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to account for the only run on Sunday in a 1-0 Sonoma State win over Cal State San Bernardino at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park.  With the win, the 18th-ranked Seawolves complete a four-game sweep of the Coyotes, improving to 30-11, 22-10 CCAA on the season.  CSUSB falls to 18-20, 12-15 CCAA with the loss.

Sunday's win gives the Seawolves at least 30 victories for the 12th time in the last 14 years.  It also moves the Seawolves to within a game of first place UC San Diego in the CCAA standings.

In the series finale, the Seawolves and Coyotes locked up in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel, with neither team able to capitalize on scoring opportunities.  In fact, both teams left nine runners on base in the game, though none would be more frustrating than the Seawolves' seventh when they had the bases loaded and nobody out, yet failed to score.

Fortunes turned for the Seawolves in the eighth inning when Kyle Jones was walked to lead of the inning, then moved over on a bunt by Ian Bridges.  The next batter, Danny Pignataro finally took advantage of the situation, scoring Jones from third on a deep fly ball to left field.

The Coyotes threatened in the ninth when Chris Lefay hit a one-out double, then was pinch run for by Danny Soles.  After a second out was recorded, Darren Dworak lined a single to center field, only to see Lefay thrown out on a tremendous throw and tag by Max Kirk and Bridges.  Though the ball skipped off the mound, Bridges had the command to reach up, get the ball, and make the tag, proving yet again that he is among the nation's finest defensive backstops.

Kendall Davis got the start for Sonoma State and pitched very well, allowing just three hits over five scoreless innings.  Thomas Lee, Troy Brown, and Cameron Ray preserved the shutout with Brown getting the win and Ray the save.

The Coyotes ended up wasting a sparkling performance from freshman Aaron Brooks, who struck out eight and allowed two hits in seven innings.  CSUSB would use a trio of pitchers in the eighth inning when the winning run was scored.

The Seawolves' next scheduled game is April 28th at Cal State East Bay.
