Baseball Splits Non-League Twinbill With Gators

Nick Ramos scored three runs in SSU's game two victory
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The 15th-ranked Sonoma State baseball squad split a non-conference doubleheader with San Francisco State on Thursday at Seawolf Diamond, falling in the opener 13-8 before storming back for a 7-0 win in the nightcap.  The split leaves the Seawolves at 22-9 on the season while the Gators go to 8-25.

The game one win for SF State was their first against Sonoma since 2006, a span of 21 games.

The Gators would waste little time in the opener, plating five runs in the first inning off Sonoma starter Jonathon Flinn.  The inning was helped by a Seawolf error that prolonged a rally long enough to see Zack Anderson blast a three-run home run.

The rest of the game would be a cat-and-mouse affair with the Seawolves creeping up only to see the Gators pull away.  SF State finally put the game out of reach in the ninth inning when they scored three times to turn a 10-8 lead into a 13-8 advantage.

Sean Proni led all hitters in the game with four hits.  Anderson drove in four and Matt Memeo also homered as the Gators pounded out 15 hits.  Eric Keithley was credited with win for the Gators.

Ryan Averkieff and Danny Pignataro each had three hits for the Seawolves and Brian Joyce connected for his first SSU home run.  Flinn was tagged with the defeat.

The Seawolves turned the tables in game two, rolling to an easy shutout win.  Sonoma got on the board in the first when Cameron Cook doubled home Nick Ramos, giving a quartet of pitchers all the run support they'd need.

Casey Slate, Devon Kreyenhagen, Derek Lewis, and Thomas Lee were brilliant, allowing just three hits over seven innings.  Slate got the win after striking out six in three innings.  Ramos had a nice game at the plate for Sonoma, going 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs.

Kyle Pfeiffer suffered the loss for the Gators after allowing seven runs, six of them earned, in four innings of work.

The Seawolves return to the diamond on Saturday when they host Cal State Stanislaus in a noon doubleheader.
