ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State softball team will play in their first ever CCAA conference tournament as the four seed after splitting their final regular season double header of the year against San Francisco State. Sonoma took care of buisness in game one by defeating the Gators 3-2, and fell in the nightcap, 3-0. The Seawolves got some help today from Cal State Stanislaus, as the Warriors swept both of their games today against Cal State Dominguez Hills to allow Sonoma State an opportunity at the tournament. Sonoma finishes the regular season at 33-21 overall, and 17-14 in the CCAA.
In game one, San Francisco State struck first, as the Gators platted two runs in the top of the second. Colleen Nilles singled down the left field line, and Karolyn Gubbine reached on a fielder's choice bunt. Pinch-runner Lauren Candia and Gubbine advanced to second and third respectively on a sacrifice bunt by the Gators Elizabeth Best-Still. Both runners were driven in on a clutch two-out single up the middle by Danielle Chapman, giving San Francisco the early 2-0 advantage.
Sonoma State would answer back in the home half of the fourth with two runs of their own. With two outs and runners on first and second head coach Jaime Wallin called upon her bench to get the job done. Insert pinch-hitter
Brittany Martinez, who sent a rocket that one-hopped the right field fence to even the score at 2-2.
Senior
Lindsay Emmel would settle down, not allowing a hit after the third inning. Emmel went the distance again, scattering three hits, allowing two runs, and striking out four Gators.
It was fitting on senior day for Sonoma State that a senior would be the hero.
Nicole Cordova delivered a walk-off RBI single that drove in
Kayla Ledford with the Seawolves down to their last out. Cordova was 2-for-4 with two singles and one RBI.
In the nightcap, pitching was the name of the game, as the Gators Vanessa Truan was simply marvelous in out-dueling the Seawolves
Brittany Williams to secure her eighth win of the season. The junior from San Jose had a no hitter through five innings before Sonoma was able to break through with two hits in the bottom of the sixth.
The Gators scored right out of the gate, as a Kelsey Wood single platted Chapman in the top of the first. San Francisco State tacked on one more run when Wood was driven in on a Lea Cardenas RBI single up the middle.
The Gators tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to secure the 3-0 victory.
The four seeded Seawovles will open the CCAA conference tournament on Apr. 30 against one seeded Humboldt State.
