KEIZER, Ore- Sonoma State's improbable run at the NCAA West Regional came to an unfortunate end on Sunday as the Seawolves dropped a 12-4 decision to UC San Diego in the west region championship game. The Seawolves finish their campaign at 35-16 on the season.
And despite a final margin of eight runs, the game was much, much closer than the score would indicate as UCSD rallied for eight runs in the ninth inning.
Weak in the pitching department after several strenuous games, the Seawolves turned to reliever
Troy Brown, a senior who had a previous season-high outing of three and a third. Brown pitched very good, holding the Tritons to just two runs over six and a third before Matt Cantele got him for a two-run home run to left field.
Down 4-3, the Seawolves rallied in bottom of the seventh when
Joe Slater singled home
Jonathan Lewis to tie the game at four.
In the ninth, the wheels came off for Sonoma State as the bullpen gave up four singles, three doubles, and hit a batter before an out was recorded. The final tally was eight runs in the inning on eight hits in the inning, giving the Tritons more than enough cushion to cruise through the ninth and in to their first NCAA Division II Championship appearance.
Brian Wright had a solo home run for Sonoma State and
Kyle Jones busted out of a weekend slump with a pair of hits.
Following the game,
Morgan Rodriguez and
Joe Slater were named to the All-Tournament team.
As a team, the Seawolves set a new school record for fielding percentage in a season at .975.
