POMONA, Calif- Sonoma State senior
Tracy Webster scored a goal in the 60th minute to tie the game at one but a late score by Cal Poly Pomona just five minutes before the end of regulation proved to be the game winner as the Seawolves fell to the Broncos, 2-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Assocation women's soccer action on Friday afternoon at Kellogg Field.
The Seawolves fall to 3-3-1 overall (1-1-1 CCAA) as the Broncos continue their hot streak and move to 6-1-0 and 2-1-0 in conference play.
Cal Poly Pomona dominated the first half, taking a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 9-3 shot advantage into the halftime break after Carolyn Rubendall found the net at 19:08.
In the second half, Webster took control of a loose ball in front of the net and proceeded to fire it past Bronco goalkeeper Nakisha Gutierrez for her third goal of the season to knot the match at one goal apiece.
The Seawolves continued to put the pressure on Pomona's defense but the Broncos' Andrea Solerno converted on a scoring opportunity with just 4:59 left in regulation for the eventual game winner.
In the end, the Broncos led in shots (14-9), corner kicks (5-2) and saves (6-5). Gutierrez made the six saves for CPP while her counterpart, Sonoma State's
Courtney Grixti made five stops between the posts.
Webster led the Seawolves in shots with two and eight others fired an attempt as well. Mary Carroll led all players with four shots and Callie Wilson added three.
Sonoma State will take on Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. before returning home next weekend to face San Francisco State.
