Tritons Score Late To Stun Argonauts In OT

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Junior Shane Micheil scored two late goals on Friday to send his UC San Diego Tritons to a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Notre Dame de Namur in the opening game of the 2009 Seawolf Classic in Rohnert Park.  Micheil's first goal, in the 88th minute knotted the game and his score with just 15 seconds left in overtime sent the Tritons into the win column.  UCSD goes to 3-0-0 on the year while NDNU remains winless at 0-4-0.

After an evenly played first half that saw both teams attempt six shots yet come up empty in the score column, the Argonauts would be first to break through when Cristobal Montes took a cross from Nathan Carlson and blasted it to the top right, beyond UCSD goalkeeper Peter Akman.  It was the second goal of the season for Montes, an All-West Region pick in 2008.

Despite frantic effort and a couple of close calls, UC San Diego was unsuccessful at finding net until just over two minutes remained in regulation when Micheil scored the first of his goals.  After a corner kick, the ball ricocheted around in the box before  Micheil blasted it home at the 87:49 mark.

The goal gave the Tritons a shot of confidence that they would carry in to overtime.  Though they would be out shot in regulation 13-11, UCSD would hold a 5-0 shot advantage in the extra period.  The final shot, and eventual game-winner came off a pass from Tony Choi to Micheil, who blasted it across the box and beyond a diving Joseph Mora with just 15 ticks left.

On Sunday, the Tritons will take on Grand Canyon while the Argonauts will do battle with Sonoma State.

Box Score:  UC San Diego 2, Grand Canyon 1 (ot)
