ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Senior
Stephanie Barnes had 17 points on Thursday night to lead Sonoma State to a 61-56 win over Cal State Stanislaus in CCAA women's basketball action at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. The victory ends a three-game slide for the Seawolves as they improve to 6-8, 4-5 CCAA. The Warriors suffer their eighth loss in their last nine, falling to 2-9, 1-6 CCAA on the season.
Tied at eight midway through the first half, Cal State Stanislaus went on a quick 5-0 run to grab a 13-8 lead. They would be able to hold on to it for nearly ten minutes before a
Nadia Williams jumper tied things up at 22 right before the break.
Through better shooting from the field and a nice run at the free throw line, the Seawolves were able to methodically build up the lead as it reached as many ten on three occasions late in the second half. The Warriors would be able to trim it to three with a 7-0 run with just under four minutes to go, but that's as close as it would get.
After mediocre shooting in the first half (25.8%), the Seawolves shot much better in the second (45.5%), though they would finish at just 34% for the game.
Barnes led Sonoma with 17 points on 6-of-15 shooting.
Aly Conway,
Roxanne Rentschler, and
Nadia Williams had eight points each in a supporting offensive role.
Christy Shreve grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
For Stanislaus, leading scorer Alishea Kelley scored 20 points, 13 of them in the second half. The Warriors' Katie Busi, who averages a double-double for the season, finished with 13 rebounds, but just eight points as she was in foul trouble most of the night. Busi played just 27 minutes, well below her season average of nearly 33.
As a team the Warriors shot 36.8% for the game. They were held to just four assists, all of which came in the second half.
The Seawolves will look to turn their single win into a streak tomorrow night when they host longtime rival Chico State. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
