SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- Sophomore
Jaclyn Bisordi scored 13 of her team-high 15 points in the second half to lead Sonoma State to a 51-46 victory over San Francisco State on Saturday night in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball action at San Francisco. The Seawolves evened their record at 5-5 and improved to 3-2 in conference play. The Gators fell to 5-7 (1-3 CCAA).
San Francisco State controlled the game early, jumping out to a 12-point lead at 19-7 with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half on a three-ball by Juliet Masei. The Seawolves answered back with a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to pull within three points at 19-16. Masei nailed another three pointer to give the Gators a six-point advantage but Sonoma State would score the last five points of the half and go into halftime down just one point at 22-21.
Both teams had identical numbers from the floor in the first half (8-of-28) but San Francisco State controlled the boards and brought down 24 rebounds to Sonoma State's 17. The Seawolves forced 11 Gator turnovers.
The Gators then took an eight point lead (34-26) with 11: 27 remaining in regulation but the Seawolves would then go on a seven-point run to close the deficit to just one at 34-33. From that point on, each team would trade baskets, keeping the score in favor of the Gators for much of the second half. However, freshman
Nadia Williams stole the ball from Donisha Tate at 5:49 left and Bisordi connected on an and-one opportunity to give the Seawolves their first lead of the ballgame at 41-39.
Masei hit her sixth three-pointer of the game to even the score at 44-44 with under three minutes left on the clock but it would be the closest the Gators would get. Sonoma State outscored San Francisco State 7-2 the rest of the way, giving the Seawolves their third conference victory this season.
Bisordi followed up a career-high 20-point performance against Western Washington back on Dec. 21 with the aforementioned 15 points on Saturday night. Freshman
Taylor Vigil added a career-high 10 points and senior
Stephanie Barnes scored nine. Sonoma State forced 24 total turnovers and only gave up 14.
Masei led all scorers with 18 points, all coming on six three-pointers. Tate, among the national leaders in rebounds this season, grabbed 12 in the contest and Dominque Hunter came down with 11.
With the victory, head coach
Mark Rigby is just two wins away from becoming the first women's basketball coach in Sonoma State history with 200 wins. He is currently 198-144 in 13 seasons with the Seawolves.
Sonoma State will return to action in a rare Sunday night contest at Cal State Monterey Bay, tipping off at 5:30 p.m. at Otter Sports Center in Seaside.
