ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Despite a season-high 32 turnovers, three Sonoma State players scored in double-figures to help defeat Cal State East Bay, 58-51, in women's basketball action Thursday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves evened their overall record at 8-8 and rose above .500 with a 6-5 record in CCAA play. The Pioneers remain winless this season at 0-15 and 0-10.
Sonoma State led from start to finish but Cal State East Bay kept things close in the first half, forcing one tie at 16-16 with four minutes remaining in the first half. The Seawolves would then pull back in front and take a four point lead into the intermission at 22-18.
Neither team shot particularly well through the first 20 minutes, as the Seawolves shot just 29.2 percent from the floor (7-24). The Pioneers weren't much better, making just five shots in 26 attempts (19.2 percent) but Cal State East Bay forced 16 Seawolf turnovers, including seven steals. Sonoma State, on the other hand, took advantage of 13 Pioneer miscues.
The Seawolves then came out on fire in the second half. Eight minutes into the second half, Sonoma State jumped out to an 11 point lead at 35-24 on a layup by sophomore
Aly Conway. Cal State East Bay came storming back, however, to pull within three points on two occasions with just under three minutes left to play. Back-to-back three-pointers by sophomores
Jaclyn Bisordi and
Roxanne Rentschler with under a minute left in regulation put the Pioneers away to take the eight point victory. Sonoma State shot 60.9 percent fromt he floor in the final 20 minutes on 14-of-23 shooting -- they finished 44.7 percent in the game (21-47).
Rentschler had a career-high night with 11 points, grabbing four rebounds. Senior
Stephanie Barnes added 10 points for the Seawolves and was a rebound shy of her first double-double this season with nine. Sophomore
Christy Shreve and junior
Oly Larkin came down with seven boards each.
Cal State East Bay was led by the 15 points of Claudia Nelson. Emily Valenziano and Lauren Lucchesi added 10 for the Pioneers, who finished just 28.3 percent from the field (17-60).
Sonoma State will wrap up its four-game homestand on Saturday to take on seventh-ranked UC San Diego (14-1, 9-1 CCAA), who dropped its first game of the 2009-10 season on Thursday night at Humboldt State, 84-80. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. at The Wolves' Den.
