CARSON, Calif- Sonoma State fought through six lead changes in the first half and both teams battled back and forth but Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 20-6 run to open up the second half to pull away from the visiting Seawolves on Saturday night, taking the 68-59 victory at the Torodome. Sonoma State fell to 9-10 overall and 7-7 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills moved to 7-12 and 6-8.
The Seawolves led by as much as six at 26-20 with 6:40 left in the first half but the Toros quickly erased the deficit and took a one point lead following a 7-0 run. Each team traded buckets but Cal State Dominguez Hills ultimately took the 29-28 lead at halftime.
However, the Seawolves fell cold from the field and surrendered the aforementioned 20-6 run during the first 10 minutes of the second period, the Toros largest lead of the ballgame. Sonoma State would get to within seven points on several occasions, but it would be as close as they would get.
Sonoma State hit just 26.7 percent from the floor on 16-of-60 shooting, including just 3-of-24 from beyond the three-point arc. The Seawolves even outscored the Toro bench 49-7, but 17 turnovers and a dismal shooting night accounted the 68-59 loss.
Freshmen
Taylor Vigil and
Nadia Williams led the Seawolves on Saturday with 13 points -- it was the second consecutive night Vigil scored in double-figures. Sophomore
Kristin Montanari added nine points off the bench.
Gillian Griffin scored a game-high 22 points en route to the Toro victory. Brandie McCann (16) and Whitney Gantt (14) also scored in double-figures for CSUDH. Griffin completed her fourth double-double of the season, adding 13 rebounds. The Toros hit 40.4 percent from the floor on 21-of-52 shooting on the night.
Sonoma State will return home on Thursday to host Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:30 p.m., kicking off the Seawolves last homestand of the year.
