ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Sara Studer ended a six-match scoreless streak for Sonoma State with two goals of her own and
Allison Kern put the match out of reach with a late score, giving the Seawolves a 3-0 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field. The win gives Sonoma State its first conference win of the season, improving to 1-4-2 (2-4-2 overall). The Otters fell to 2-7-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the CCAA.
The Seawolves broke through early on when
Allie Maduell fired a cross pass to the middle of the penalty box where Studer was running side by side with an Otter defender. Studer used her forehead to finish to the left of the Cal State Monterey Bay keeper for the 1-0 lead.
The lead held for the majority of the match until Studer gave Sonoma State a comfortable two-goal cushion with just under 19 minutes to play. She took a pass from
Megan Cunningham after fighting off a defender and drilled the ball into the net at 71:17.
Just over two minutes later, at 73:39, Kern scored her first goal of the season when she regained possession of a loose ball, sprinted down the right side of the field and fired a rocket from 25 yards out, up and over CSUMB's netminder Graciela Holguin for the eventual 3-0 win.
Courtney Grixti and
Alexis Sciacqua combined on the shutout with Grixti accounting for all three of the saves for the Seawolves.
The three goals ended a six-match scoreless streak, in which Sonoma State suffered a 587 minute, 58 second scoring draught -- the longest in school history. The Seawolves outshot the Otters, 15-7, and held an advantage in corner kicks at 6-1.
Cal State Monterey Bay's Holguin made three saves in the loss and Gabriella Bozzo led the way with two shots.
Sonoma State will host San Francisco State on Sunday, which will kickoff Homecoming Week at SSU. The match between the Seawolves and Gators will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
