Kern Scores, Seawolves Hold Lumberjacks To 1-1 Tie

Allison Kern scored her second goal of the season on Friday at Arcata.
Box Score: Sonoma State 1, Humboldt State 1 (2 ot)

ARCATA, Calif- Allison Kern put Sonoma State on the scoreboard just seven minutes into the match off a corner kick by Shayla Mellenthin, but the Seawolves surrendered a goal to Humboldt State in the 40th minute to knot the score at one. Both teams then held each other scoreless the rest of the way, forcing the 1-1 tie on a rainy Friday afternoon in Arcata.

The Seawolves move to 2-8-4 overall and 1-8-4 in conference play as the Lumberjacks earned their first tie of the season, going to 3-11-1 and 3-9-1 (CCAA).

Kern's goal at 7:01 ended the Seawolves' second-longest scoreless drought of the season (and in program history), as Sonoma State hadn't scored since a 3-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 1 -- a streak of 493 minutes, 22 seconds. She took a the corner from Mellenthin and kneed it into the net for the 1-0 lead early in the match

At 39:06, Carly Kolpin scored her first goal of the season after taking possession of a pass by teammate Megan Kendall. Kolpin then weaved her way into the top of the goal box where she fired past SSU goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua for the equalizer.

Sonoma State had a 17-11 shot disadvantage heading into the final overtime period; however, the Seawolves peppered Humboldt State's netminder Jennie Paugh with five shots, two of which Paugh saved. They couldn't convert, though, as the match ended in a 1-1 tie. The Lumberjacks led in shots 19-16 and Sciacqua had another huge day between the posts, saving six shots.

Both teams will travel to Rohnert Park on Sunday for the second half of their home-and-home weekend series. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Prior to kickoff, four Sonoma State seniors will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony, which will mark their last collegiate home game -- Courtney Grixti, Jaci Davey, Jocelyn Puga and Allison Kern.
