SAN FRANCISCO- San Francisco State scored two goals in the final five minutes of the opening half and added another one just minutes into the second half, as the Gators handed Sonoma State a 3-0 loss on Friday afternoon at Crocker-Amazon Park in San Francisco. The loss sends the Seawolves to 3-9-4 overall and 2-9-4 in the CCAA. The Gators won the North Division title with the victory, as they improved to 11-3-3 overall and 10-3-2 in conference play.
San Francisco State's Michelle Spinner got the Gators onto the scoreboard at 40:17 with a nice shot after passes from Andrea Carey and Tamerra Griffin. Two minutes later, Michelle Kay added a score with another assist by Carey.
Just two and a half minutes into the second half, Kaitlin Dick gave San Francisco State a comfortable three-goal lead and cruised the eventual 3-0 win. Carey scored an assist on all three SFSU goals on the afternoon. The Gators held the advantage in shots (14-9) and both teams recorded two corner kicks.
Starting goalkeeper
Alexis Sciacqua made three saves before giving way to
Courtney Grixti in the second half. Grixti made two saves in her 45 minutes of action.
Allie Maduell,
Sara Studer and
Shayla Mellenthin fired two shots each, accounting for six of the Seawolves' nine shots.
Sonoma State will wrap up the 2010 season on Sunday when it travels to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 12:30 p.m.
