ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Chico State's leading scorer Lisa Webster punched in two goals and goalkeeper Sydney Oliver made a couple of huge saves to keep Sonoma State off the scoreboard, en route to a 2-0 win over the Seawolves on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Field. SSU falls to 2-6-2 overall and 1-6-2 in conference play. Chico State jumps above .500 at 6-5-0, 5-4-0 CCAA.
Giving the Wildcats the 1-0 lead, Webster took a ball from Kasey Wall and went one-on-one with Sonoma State goalkeeper
Courtney Grixti. Webster faked Grixti to her left, but took the ball the far post and tapped it into the back of the net. Chico State held the hosts to just one shot in the opening 45 minutes, taking a 1-0 lead into the break with five shots of their own.
In the second half, Wall and Ashley Pearman combined to serve the ball into Webster, who finished with the header beyond the reach of SSU netminder
Alexis Sciacqua, who replaced Grixti at halftime. The score held at 2-0 despite several chances by the Seawolves, including an attempt by
Sara Studer, who fired from the near side, hit the far post before it ricochet back into play. Another shot, this time by
Katie Lenci, glanced off Chico's Oliver, who barely got a hand on it to redirect the ball as it hit the post as well.
Grixti made two saves in the first half before giving way to Sciacqua, who made one save. Their counterpart, Oliver, made two saves.
Taylor Edmonds and Studer both led the way with four of Sonoma State's six shots.
It is the eighth match this season that Sonoma State has been held scoreless, and the second time this year by Chico State, who defeated the Seawolves, 4-0, two weeks ago.
Sonoma State will take on Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday (2 p.m.) before hitting the road for five of their last six matches of the season.
