Aly Henington scored a season-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting and junior
Aly Conway chipped in with 18 points, but the Sonoma State women's basketball team was outscored 10-4 in the overtime period, falling to host Cal State Stanislaus, 78-72, on Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena in Turlock. The Seawolves suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play. The Warriors earned their first conference victory, improving to 2-3 overall (1-2 CCAA).
It was close all throughout the first half and neither team lead by more than four points, except for when
Taylor Vigil gave the Seawolves their biggest lead of the half on a layup to put Sonoma State up 21-15 with nine minutes to play. The lead changed seven times in the first 20 minutes of play, but it was Cal State Stanislaus that led 35-34 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Henington led all scorers in the first half with 13 points, all within the first eight minutes of the contest. She converted on 5-of-6 shots from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 fron beyond the three point arc. The Seawolf defense held the Warriors to just 36.6 percent from the floor while the team shot 42.3 percent.
The second half was a much different story, as both teams rode huge runs to take big leads. Cal State Stanislaus jumped out to a seven point lead at 43-36 just three minutes into the half. However, Sonoma State went on a monsterous 18-0 run over the next six minutes to take the largest lead of the game at 54-43.
Cal State Stanislaus started chipping away at the lead, though, and eventually tied and led the game at 68-66 with 2:21 left. A free throw by Conway and then another free throw by
Roxanne Rentschler 18 seconds later knotted the match with 47 seconds remaining in regulation. Both teams had equal opportunity to take the lead, but a missed three pointer by each squad sent the game into overtime.
It was in the overtime period when the host Warriors took the first lead of the game and never looked back, taking the 78-72 win.
Henington's 21 led all players on Friday night while Conway, who scored a career-high 20 points last weekend, added 18 points and completed her first career double-double with 11 rebounds. Sophomore
Taylor Vigil dropped in 14 point as well for Sonoma State, one point shy of her career-high. The Seawolves hit on 24-of-58 shots (.414), besting the Warriors 31-of-75 (.413) by one-tenth of a point.
Cal State Stanislaus was led by the double-double of Katie Busi, including 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Sonoma State will travel north to Chico to take on Chico State Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. before returning home to host the CCAA/GNAC Challenge next weekend (Dec. 10-11)
