Icy Second Half Spells Defeat For Women's Hoops

The Seawolves honored their three seniors before the game.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  A ten minute dry spell late in the second half sent Sonoma State to a 55-31 defeat at the hands of Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday evening in CCAA women's basketball action in The Wolves' Den.  The loss leaves the Seawolves in a three-way tie for seventh place in the CCAA standings, at 8-10 in conference play (10-13 overall).  The Broncos improve to 17-5, 14-4 CCAA.

The top eight teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.  At 8-10, the Seawolves are tied for seventh with Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills.  San Francisco State won on Saturday to go one game up at 9-9.

Despite the lopsided final score, Saturday night's affair was tight for a half.  The teams were tied four times in the first nine minutes before the Broncos closed on a mini-run to go up six, 28-22 at the break.

Sonoma would score five of the first eight points in the second half to draw within four at 31-27.  From that point on, however, the Seawolves would go extremely cold.  After a five-minute dry spell from the field was broken up by a Kelsey Wagner layup, the Seawolves would end the game without a field goal in the final eleven and a half minutes.  The only thing that would keep the Seawolves from going scoreless the rest of the way were a pair of free throws.

Oly Larkin would wind up the Seawolves' leading scorer on the night with 13 points all of them coming in the first half.  As a team, Sonoma State shot just 20% for the game and just 10% (3-for-29) in the second half.

Reyana Colson had a big night for the Broncos, posting 17 points, ten rebounds, and five steals.  Stephisha Walton assisted with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Seawolves will head out on the road to conclude their regular season.  First up is a trip to Chico State next Friday.

Box Score:  Cal Poly Pomona 55, Sonoma State 31
