SAN BERNARDINO, Calif- Despite another home run by
Max Shupe, his fourth of the season, Sonoma State couldn't overcome an early lead by host Cal State San Bernardino, falling 8-6 in a game called after the eighth inning due to rain showers. The Seawolves have lost five of their last six games, including three of four to the Coyotes, falling to 1-3 in conference play and 6-6 overall. Cal State San Bernardino improves to 7-2 (7-1 CCAA).
Cal State San Bernardino led from start to finish, scoring five runs in the first three innings off of starting pitcher
Tyler Hess (1-1).
The Seawolves made things interesting, though, scoring a run in the third and the fourth innings before putting a two spot up on the scoreboard in the fifth inning via two doubles and a single, closing the Coyote lead to 5-4. However, CSUSB countered right back in their half of the fifth, scoring two more runs on reliever
Casey Slate for the 7-4 lead.
Trevor Longfellow ran into trouble in the top half of the sixth after a leadoff home run by Shupe. A single by
Ryan Stevens, a double by
Randy Wells and an intentional walk to
Steven Filippi to occupy first base, loaded the bags.
Brian Wright then walked to bring in a run, narrowing the score to just 7-6, leaving the bases loaded with two outs. Lucas Sanford then replaced Longfellow with success on the mound, forcing
Joey Parigi to groundout, ending the Seawolf threat.
The Coyotes then added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after a RBI double by Ethan Chapman. However, Sonoma State was unable to make the comeback due to rain showers that suspended the game.
Wells had two hits to lead the Seawolves at the plate while Wright added three RBI on the day. Hess and Slate worked four innings, giving up a combined nine hits, as Hess struck out three.
Chapman led Cal State San Bernardino with three hits and two RBI.
Sonoma State will return home on Tuesday to take on San Francisco State in a single game, set for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
