Seawolves Ride Olsem To 74-47 Win Over Otters

Will Olsem led the Seawolves with 24 points on Thursday night.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Freshman Will Olsem drained six three-pointers on his way to a game-high 24 points on Thursday to lead Sonoma State to a 74-47 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA men's basketball action at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.  The win is the fourth in the last six for the Seawolves (7-13, 6-9 CCAA) as they continue their surge for a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament.  The Otters drop to 7-12, 5-9 CCAA.

Thursday night's win avenges an 80-63 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay on January 3rd in Seaside, salvaging a season split for Sonoma State.

After a slow start by both teams yielded just a 2-1 Otter lead after five and a half minutes, the Seawolves' offense finally got in gear when freshman Jason Walter hit a three-pointer, one of eleven by Sonoma on the night.

Down 9-8 a couple minutes later, Walter hit another three to ignite the Seawolves on a 25-8 run that saw them go up 33-16.

The lead would never be in danger again as Sonoma State played smart basketball and refused to let Cal State Monterey Bay make a game of it.  The Seawolves would limit the Otters to just 28.9% shooting from the field and an even worse clip, 10.5%, from three-point range (2-for-19).

Olsem hit 6-of-11 from three-point territory on the night en route to 24 points, his second-highest output of the season.  Steven Pratt added 11 points and Kyle Shandera and Patrick Scott had eight rebounds apiece.

Sean Jergo paced Cal State Monterey Bay with 12 points and six rebounds.  Jamelle Tolliver came off the bench for nine.

The Seawolves hope to move closer to the .500 mark in conference play on Saturday night when they host San Francisco State.  The Gators lost to Humboldt State on Thursday and are just a half-game ahead of the Seawolves for seventh place in the conference.

Box Score:  Sonoma State 74, Cal State Monterey Bay 47
