SEASIDE, Calif- Sonoma State piled on the offense on Friday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay in non-conference baseball action in Seaside. The Seawolves came from behind to nip the Otters 8-7 in the opener before exploding for nine runs in the first inning en route to a 16-5 win in the nightcap. The wins lift the Seawolves to 3-0 on the season. The Otters drop to 0-2.
The Seawolves have now won 31 of the 32 all-time meetings between the schools since Cal State Monterey Bay added baseball in 2006.
The Seawolves got three runs in the eighth inning of game one to come back from a 7-5 deficit.
Joey Parigi, a native of Monterey, had a big homecoming. Leading off, the first baseman went 3-for-4 with two walks, a home run, and two RBIs. Sonoma State also got a home run from
Randy Wells and multiple hits from Wells,
Ryan Stevens, and
Austin Hogans to pace a 14-hit attack.
Joey Van Cleave got the start and went 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs. Four Seawolves appeared in relief with
Jayson Richards earning the victory after 1.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball.
Brian Flint recorded his second save in as many games.
While game one was close, game two was a blowout from the first inning as the Seawolves sent 15 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the first alone. In six innings- the game was cut short due to darkness- the Seawolves pounded out 13 hits and drew eleven walks.
Steven Filippi led the way with three hits and four runs scored. Sonoma also got home runs from
Ryan Morales and
Cameron Cook.
Ken Cook got the start and went two innings before giving way to the eventual winning pitcher,
Kyle Lawton, who went two and a third.
Ian Ocon closed the door with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless baseball.
The Seawolves will go for the series sweep tomorrow when they hit the field for another doubleheader, weather permitting.
