Baseball Splits At East Bay, Earns Series Win

Cameron Cook had a big day at the plate on Sunday in Hayward.
HAYWARD, Calif-  Freshman Steven Filippi crossed the plate with the winning run in the 11th inning of Sunday's nightcap to give Sonoma State a doubleheader split on the road at Cal State East Bay.  The Seawolves lost in game one, 11-10, before coming back for the 9-8 victory in the second game, to take a three games to one series victory against the Pioneers.  The Seawolves go to 15-17, 8-12 CCAA on the season while the Pioneers move to 10-21-1, 6-18 CCAA.

The Seawolves' victory in game two brought to a close a total of seven and a half hours and 20 innings of baseball on Sunday afternoon.  Factor in Saturday's doubleheader, and the Seawolves and Pioneers played 36 innings for almost twelve and a half hours, in a 30-hour span.

Sunday afternoon's first game had several unfortunate similarities from last Sunday's series finale against Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Seawolves trailed big late in the game, they mounted a furious comeback in the ninth, but in the end, they came up a run short.

The Pioneers got out to an early lead with a thunderous six-run third inning that brought 11 batters to the plate and saw Sonoma starter Kendall Davis chased.

The lead was pushed to 9-0 in the fifth and by the time the ninth inning started, the Pioneers held a commanding 10-3 advantage.

Like last Sunday, when the Seawolves rallied for ten unanswered runs in a 14-13 loss to the Otters, Sonoma was helped by a shaky Pioneer pitching staff.  Following a leadoff single by Randy Wells, the Seawolves drew four walks and two batters were hit by pitches, to cut into the lead and set up a bases loaded triple by Cameron Cook that brought the Seawolves all the way back, tying the score at ten.  This all happened before a single out was recorded, though after the triple, the Poineers' Devin Grigg coerced the Seawolves into three straight groundouts.

Not scoring Cook from third would turn out to be a big deal as the Pioneers' Stephen Gatehouse led off the ninth with a walk-off home run to left field.

Robby White was charged with the loss for Sonoma State after giving up the game-winning round tripper.  Kyle Jones was the Seawolves' most effective hitter, going 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs.

Game One Box:  Cal State East Bay 11, Sonoma State 10

Needing a victory in the nightcap to keep any hopes of a playoff appearance a reality, the Seawolves had to go extras to get the 'W'.

Trailing 6-5 heading into the eighth, it looked like the Seawolves may have found the game-winning runs when they put up a three-spot, highlighted by a three-run triple from Max Shupe.  Cal State East Bay would not surrender so easily, however, as a two-run home run by Gatehouse, his second of the day, off Jarrod Dumont tied the game, 8-8.

Finally, the game winner came when, after Steven Fillippi was inserted as a pinch runner for Ryan Stevens, Randy Wells knocked a single to center field that was mishandled by the outfielder, allowing Fillippi to score from first.

Dumont nailed down the win in the ninth, forcing Levi Josewski to ground out to second with the tying run just 90 feet away.  Dumont would go four and two-thirds in relief to earn his first win of the season.

Shupe and Stevens led the Seawolves' offensive attack with three hits apiece.  Cameron Cook, nearly the hero in game one, had a big encore, finishing with a double and a home run to go along with three runs batteed in.

Game Two Box:  Sonoma State 9, Cal State East Bay 8
