ROHNERT PARK, Calif.- Sonoma State picked up two wins Friday to inch closer to .500, but both wins came in drastically different style. The Seawolves rode out an amazing performance from starter
Kendall Davis who effectively silenced the Warrior bats in a 3-1 victory in the opener.
Joey Parigi paced Sonoma State on offense, hitting two of the Seawolves five home runs en route to a 16-7 game two victory. Sonoma State improves to 20-22 overall and 13-17 in the CCAA. Cal State Stanislaus falls to 17-22 this season and 13-17 in conference.
Seawolves 3, Warriors 1
Sonoma State found itself in trouble early on in the first inning with runners on the corners and two outs. Casey Filkins was unable to score the runner, as he flied out to center. This would be the start of an amazing streak of 16 straight batters silenced by Davis.
The Seawolves jumped on the board first, thanks to an opposite field shot from
Kyle Jones that just sailed inside the left field foul pole. The Seawolves came up big again in the sixth inning, scoring two runs off a
Randy Wells RBI single and an
Austin Hogans sacrifice fly.
The Warriors would answer right back in the seventh to score their first and only run of the game. David Contreras scored on a Michael Johnson groundout, but that would be all Stanislaus could muster as the Seawolves turned the game over to
Brian Flint who filled out the remaining frames.
Davis (2-2) picked up the win after going six and one-third innings while giving up only two hits and two walks while striking out seven. The run came unearned. Flint notched his fifth save of the season, while giving up only one hit and striking out five in the final two and two-thirds innings.
Jones led the offense by scoring two runs and going 2-for-4 with the solo shot. Wells went 1-for-3 with the aforementioned RBI single.
Vinny Pacchetti (3-5) received the loss after allowing three runs over six innings of work. Johnson went 1-for-4 and drove in the only Warrior run. Stanislaus only managed three hits.
Seawolves 16, Warriors 7
With
Scott Alexander on the mound, the Seawolves were looking to repeat the same style of success from game one. However, this game had a different tone from the get-go as Corey Conflenti homered to left field on the very first pitch of the game.
After scoring another run in the third inning, the Warriors were looking to salvage a day one split. That's when Sonoma State took over. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third with two runners on, Parigi brought home
Bobby Cozine and
Ian Cook with one swing of the bat, and gave the Seawolves the lead that they would not relinquish. Sonoma State added two more runs before finishing the inning up 5-2.
Continuing the momentum of the hot bats in the fourth, Parigi again sent a shot over the fence for his second home run of the game. After
Max Shupe singled,
Ryan Stevens brought him home with Sonoma State's third home run of the game and extended the lead 8-2.
The Warriors would not go down without a fight, scoring five runs in the seventh and eight innings combined, but the Seawolves answered in each frame; an
Erik Hansen three run bomb in the seventh, and a
Garrett Gooselaw two RBI double in the eighth.
Alexander (3-5) got credit for the win despite allowing nine walks in five innings pitched. He did, however, only allow one hit and struck out eight Warriors.
Robby White received the save after pitching the final four innings, allowing five hits and five runs.
Parigi sparked the offense going 3-for-4 with four runs, three RBI and two home runs. Hansen, Shupe, and Stevens each had two hits and multiple RBI for the Seawolves who hit a team total of 17 hits.
Kory Wallace (6-5) received the loss, failing to get out of the fourth inning while giving up eight runs on eight hits and two walks. Conflenti provided most of the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs, four RBI and a home run.
Sonoma State will conclude the four game series with Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday April 18th in Turlock, where they will look for the sweep over the Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
