LOS ANGELES, Calif-
Randy Wells singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning before Cal State L.A. could force extra innings with a run of their own in the bottom half of the ninth, but the 6-6 tie wouldn't last long as
Bobby Cozine scored the eventual game-winner on a
Joey Parigi single up the middle. The Seawolves added another run on a wild pitch later in the tenth to give SSU the 8-6 extra inning victory over Cal State L.A. in the series opener at Los Angeles. The Seawolves improve to 21-24 overall and 14-19 in conference play. The Golden Eagles fall to 17-25 (15-18).
The Seawolves and Golden Eagles traded runs in the second and third innings before Cal State L.A. could pull away with two runs in their half of the fourth inning. Joe Park and Matt Miraldi had back-to-back RBI singles to give CSULA the 4-2 lead.
In the sixth, Sonoma State evened the game at four after
Ian Cook singled with runners on first and second, but a subsequent error on L.A. shortstop Jesus Campos allowed all three runners to move up a base, including
Randy Wells, who scored on the play. In the next at bat,
Brian Wright scored
Austin Hogans on a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game.
Cal State L.A. added a run and took the 5-4 lead in the seventh when Max Moya flied out to
Kyle Jones in center field, scoring Chris Matzner. The Seawolves again evened the score on another RBI by Wright that scored Wells.
Brian Flint, who relieved starting pitcher
Scott Alexander in the seventh, shut down the Cal State L.A. line up in the eighth, setting up the potential go-ahead inning for Sonoma State. Wells in fact gave the Seawolves a 6-5 lead with a single to center field, scoring
Steven Filippi from second base.
However, Flint ran into trouble in the bottom of the night, allowing a RBI double to Sam Wiley that again knotted the game, this time at 6-6.
Jarrod Dumont came on to shut down the possibility of Cal State L.A. bringing the winning run home.
In the tenth, Parigi singled up the middle scoring Cozine from second for the go-ahead run. With runners on the corners, Matt Stropoli, the Golden Eagles' third pitcher of the night, allowed Wright to score on a wild pitch, giving the Seawolves the 8-6 lead and eventual victory. Dumont (2-3) ran into trouble in the bottom of the tenth, loading the bases with just one out, but he struck out the next two batters to hold on to the win.
Wells led Sonoma State with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI, while Jones went 3-for-4. Both teams had 11 hits in the contest.
Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. will resume the four-game series tomorrow with a twinbill, scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
