LOS ANGELES, Calif-
Kyle Jones combined for five hits and 10 RBI, including two home runs as the Sonoma State offense outscored Cal State L.A. 31-18 on 33 hits to sweep the Golden Eagles 20-15 and 11-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Reeder Field in Los Angeles. The Seawolves move to one game under .500 at 23-24 overall and 16-19 in conference play. Cal State L.A. falls to 17-27 (15-20 CCAA).
Sonoma State 20, Cal State L.A. 15
Joey Parigi started the game off right for Sonoma State with a leadoff home run, going ahead 1-0. The Seawolves scored four more runs in the inning to take an early 5-0. Cal State L.A. got a run back in the bottom of the first on a fielding error by
Randy Wells.
In the second, the Seawolves added five more runs before the Golden Eagles added another run in the bottom half to take a large 10-2 lead.
After CSULA scored four more runs in the third to close the gap to 10-6. However, SSU added four more runs over the next three innings to extend the lead again out to an eight run advantage at 14-6. During the next two innings, the Golden Eagles got to within 17-15 with eight runs during the seventh and eighth innings.
In the ninth, Sonoma State grabbed three insurance runs before
Jarrod Dumont shut down Cal State L.A. in the final at bat to help the Seawolves to a offensive-minded 20-15 victory.
Cameron Cook led the way with six RBI on 3-for-5 batting with a run scored. Jones had three hits, five runs scored and five RBI. Parigi had four hits, including the leadoff home run in the first.
Max Shupe had three hits with three runs and two RBI.
The two teams combined for 35 runs on 40 hits and six errors in the game, but Sonoma State held the advantage in hits 21-19.
Kendall Davis got the victory despite tossing three innings and giving up five hits, six runs (four earned) wiht four walks and two strikeouts. Dumont got his third save of the season after pitching the final one and two-thirds innings, giving up just one hit.
Sonoma State 11, Cal State L.A. 3
The Seawolves left off where they finished in game one, scoring five runs in the top of the first, including a grand slam home run by Jones. With three runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth, Sonoma State led 10-2 going into the seventh inning.
Both teams traded runs in the final inning, but
Thomas Lee surrendered just three runs, earning the complete game victory, scattering nine hits and two walks. He improves to 6-4 on the season.
With the grand slam, Jones had five RBI in the game, going 2 for 4.
Ryan Stevens was perfect at the plate (3 for 3) with two RBI and Shupe also had two hits with three runs scored and a RBI.
Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with a single game, starting at 11 a.m. The Seawolves will then return home to wrap up the 2010 season with a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona.
