ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Needing just one win to grab the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season title, the Sonoma State softball team managed just six hits in two games against Humboldt State, falling 3-1 and 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field. The Seawolves fall to 38-15 overall and 24-12 in the CCAA and finish second in the final standings behind Cal State Monterey Bay. The Lumberjacks kept their playoff hopes alive, improving to 32-23 overall and 21-15 in conference play.

The Otters will compete as the No. 1 seed next weekend. Cal State Dominguez Hills will be the No. 3 seed and Chico State will go into the tournament as the No. 4 seed. Humboldt State 3, #14 Sonoma State 1

As it was in the first two games of the series, Humboldt State drew first blood and quick. Nikki Ketteringham blasted a 2-0 pitch to right field for a solo home run, giving the Lumberjacks an early 1-0 cushion.

The Seawolves tied things up at one when Rochelle Vanyi went yard in the fourth on a 2-2 count.

Humboldt State bounced right back in their next at bat after a Ketteringham RBI single and another RBI single by Chrissy Stalf to give the Lumberjacks the 3-1 lead.

From then on out, HSU starting pitcher Gracie Perez shut the potent Seawolf lineup down, retiring nine of the next 11 batters faced to push the Lumberjacks to a 3-1 victory in the opener.

Perez (15-9), the lone senior on the Humboldt State squad, gave up just two hits, including the home run to Vanyi in the fourth inning. The other hit came on a Vanessa Currie single in the sixth.

Samantha Lipperd (20-6) went the distance for Sonoma State in the loss, scattering seven hits, giving up three runs and two walks. She struck out four.

Humboldt State 5, #14 Sonoma State 0

In the regular season finale for both teams, Ketteringham once again got the scoring started for Humboldt State with a bases loaded double down the left field line that scored the games first two runs in the top of the second.

In the Seawolves next at bat down 2-0, Humboldt State pitcher Vaneza Hoover walked the bases loaded with two outs, but forced Jesse Talaugon to groundout to end the SSU threat.

Humboldt State then broke the game wide open with three runs in the top of the sixth inning on another two-RBI double by Ketteringham and a RBI single by Lindsay Warren, giving HSU the 5-0 lead.

Ketteringham accounted for all eight of Humboldt State's runs on the day, hitting home six runs and scoring three runs, one of which was her leadoff home run in the opener. She went 4 for 8 at the plate.

Hoover (14-10), meanwhile, shut down the Sonoma State line up, finishing the complete game shutout, allowing just four hits, four walks while striking out two.

Janelle Arnold, Currie, Kayla Ledford and Ashley Britton each had a hit to account for the four by the Seawolves.

Sonoma State will travel to Stockton next weekend for the CCAA Championship Tournament where the Seawolves look to take on the No. 3 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in the first round. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
