ROHNERT PARK, Calif- When the clouds rolled in, and the temperature dropped, runs came at a premium as Sonoma State and 25th-ranked Chico State split decisions with the Seawolves taking a 2-0 game one victory and the Wildcats capping off the four game series with a 3-2 win to take three out of four overall. Sonoma State now stands at 16-20 overall and 9-15 in the CCAA. Chico State sits comfortably at 23-11 this season with a 18-10 conference mark.
Seawolves 2, Wildcats 0
It didn't take long for the Seawolves to capture the lead in game one. After a quick top half inning, Sonoma State took advantage of a Wildcat fielding mishap that put
Erik Hansen on first. This set up
Max Shupe, who had dominated the Wildcats on Thursday, going 7-for-9 in two games. Shupe sent a 2-1 pitch sailing over the power alley in left-center field to give the Seawolves the early 2-0 lead.
From then on, Sonoma State turned the game over to
Scott Alexander (2-4) who silenced the Chico bats by going eight scoreless innings of work, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Kendall Davis came in the ninth, striking out three straight batters, the third reaching on a wild pitch, to preserve the shutout and picked up his first save this season. Shupe accounted for the pair of Seawolf runs, going 1-for-3 with the aforementioned two-run home run.
Scott Greene (2-2) was the tough luck loser despite pitching seven quality innings, only allowing one earned run and striking out seven. Jackson Evans provided the only offense Chico could muster, going 1-for-4 with a double.
Wildcats 3, Seawolves 2
Hoping to salvage a split and spoil the Wildcats' plans to take the series, the Seawolves opened up to another early lead. With runners on the corners,
Ryan Stevens flied out to left field bringing home
Bobby Cozine on the sacrifice fly and giving Sonoma State a 1-0 lead.
However, Chico State would answer right back in the next frame. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Tyler Hess stepped on the mound in relief of starter
Joey Parigi. Michael Murphy singled on a 2-1 pitch bringing home two Wildcats and giving Chico State its first lead of the day, 2-1.
Keeping the fighting spirit alive, Sonoma State answered in the bottom of the third off a solo shot from Hansen. Both teams struggled to produce runs in the middle innings as the Wildcats and Seawolves combined to strand seven runners.
Chico State had the final say in the outcome, manufacturing the final run in the sixth. With two outs, and a runner on second, Ben Manlove singled in the go ahead run. The Wildcats would hold on to the lead to a 3-2 victory.
Hess (1-2) received the loss after going five and one-third innings without allowing an earned run and striking out five. Hansen went 1-for-3 with the solo home run and Shupe continued his dominance over Wildcat pitching, going 2-for-3.
Casey Edelbrock (3-2) went the distance for Chico, striking out four while walking none. Murphy drove in two RBI while going 1-for-4 as Bringas went 1-for-2 with two runs.
Sonoma State returns to action on Friday, April 9th when they begin a four game series against the San Francisco State Gators. Both Friday and Sunday's game will be played at Rohnert Park, while the Seawolves will travel to Maloney Field for Saturday's doubleheader. First pitch on Friday is set for 3:00 p.m.
