Seawolves Drop Series Opener To Broncos, 11-5

Garrett Gooselaw had three singles for the Seawolves on Friday.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  A six-run fifth inning spelled doom for Sonoma State on Friday afternoon as Cal Poly Pomona cruised to an 11-5 win over the Seawolves in the opener of a four-game CCAA series at Seawolf Diamond.  The loss drops the Seawolves to 23-26, 16-21 CCAA on the season while the Broncos improve to 24-26, 16-21 CCAA.

The game started out with the teams trading runs in the first inning and after two frames, the score remained tied.  In the third, the Broncos broke through for a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI hits from Tyson Edwards and Eric Riedel.  Two more runs were tacked on in the fourth before the floodgates were thrown wide open in the fifth.

After a lead off single by Riedel, Sonoma relief pitcher Jarrod Dumont induced outs to two of the next three hitters.  That's when the Broncos bats came alive.  Following a two-run single by Manuel Navarro and an RBI double by Marcus Makia, Dumont gave up an infield single to Jenzen Torres.  Travis Taijeron then blasted a towering home run to left center field to make the score 11-1.

The Seawolves would pick up a single run in the fifth, two in the seventh, and another in the ninth, but it would be too little, too late against the solid pitching of Travis Kelly and Erick Ruvalcaba.

Kelly went seven innings, allowing six hits and four runs, though just two of them were earned.  Ruvalcaba pitched the final two, allowing one run.

Kendall Davis picked up the loss for the Seawolves.  He allowed five runs in three and a third, walking four and striking out three.  Ken Cook did a nice job in relief, allowing just one hit and no runs in two innings.

Three Broncos had three hits in the game- Navarro, Makia, and Riedel.  Makia and Taijeron drove in three and Navarro scored three times.

Garrett Gooselaw was a bright spot on offense for the Seawolves, collecting three singles in four at bats and scoring three runs.  Joey Parigi and Max Shupe each had two runs batted in.

Games two and three of the series will be played on Saturday morning as part of a doubleheader.  Game time has been moved up an hour, to 11:00 am.
