Seawolves Blow Out Gators In Offensive Showcase

Thomas Lee earned the victory after giving up no runs and just three hits.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Randy Wells, Max Shupe and Kyle Jones combined for 10 of Sonoma State's season-high 20 hits and brought home seven of the 12 runs while starting pitcher Thomas Lee pitched seven innings of shutout ball to defeat the San Francisco State Gators, 12-3, in California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball action on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond. The Seawolves improve to 17-20 overall and 10-15 in the CCAA. The Gators fall to 17-22 (10-15 CCAA).

Sonoma State jumped all over San Francisco State starter Spencer Kreisberg (2-5) from the get-go, scoring five runs on seven hits in the first inning. Shupe got the scoring started with an RBI double, then Ryan Stevens scored Shupe on a RBI single before Jones hit a two-run home run to center field, giving the Seawolves a 4-0 lead. Steven Filippi added to the lead with a RBI single to right center, scoring Wells from second base.

Meanwhile, Lee (5-3) cruised through seven innings of work, scattering just three hits while walking one and striking out three. The Seawolves padded the five-run lead with three runs in the sixth inning on RBIs from Erik Hansen, Austin Hogans and Jones.

San Francisco State put a couple of runs up on the scoreboard in the eighth, all with two outs. Ken Cook who relieved Lee, loaded the bases after retiring his first two batters before he was replaced by Joey Van Cleave. Van Cleave hit a batter and threw a wild pitch, allowing the Gators to come within an 8-2 margin.

However, the Seawolves added four more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run by Hansen and a three-run bomb by Wells.

Devon King hit an RBI single up the middle in the ninth, but it would be all the Gators would get, as Van Cleave closed out the game, surrendering three hits and the aforementioned run in the ninth, although it was unearned.

Wells was perfect at the plate (4 for 4) with three RBI and two runs scored. Shupe and Jones had three hits each.

Sonoma State and San Francisco State will travel south to San Francisco tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at Noon. The Seawolves and Gators will then wrap up their four-game series with a single game on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park. First pitch on Sunday is set for Noon.
