Seawolves Suffer Twinbill Sweep To Broncos

The Seawolves will wrap up the regular season Sunday on Senior Day.
RONHERT PARK, Calif- Playing in their final series of the 2010 season, Sonoma State suffered a doubleheader sweep against Cal Poly Pomona. Shaky pitching and errant fielding cost the Seawolves as they fell in both games by scores of 7-6 and 8-4. Sonoma State drops to 23-28 overall and 16-23 in the CCAA while Cal Poly Pomona improves to 26-26 this season and 18-21 in the conference.

Before game one began, David Adler was honored for his superb play in the field during the 2008 season where he played flawless defense in 219 chances. Adler received the ABCA National Defensive Player of the Year Award and a banner that will be hung in the Wolves' Den.

Kyle Jones put the Seawolves on the board first after crossing home plate on a throwing error from Travis Taijeron after he fielded a Cameron Cook single. From there, both teams battled back and forth in the middle innings. After the Broncos scored two in the fourth off a 2 RBI double from Taijeron, the Seawolves answered back in the fifth with a two-run shot off the bat of Steven Filippi.

It would be the last time Sonoma State was on top. In the next frame, Cal Poly Pomona came up big at the plate. Scott Alexander put himself in jam by walking the bases loaded. Alexander plunked shortstop Erik Riedel to bring in the first run, and then walked the very next batter to bring in another run. Joe Villa drove in two more off a single down the right field line. The Broncos scored five runs on only one hit.

The Seawolves would make things interesting in the ninth, scoring a run to bring the deficit to 7-6. Unfortunately, that's where the score stood as Filippi lined out to Riedel to end the game.

Filippi drove the offense going 3-for-5 with the two-run jack. Brian Wright, Ryan Stevens and Cameron Cook each had two hits for the Seawolves, who out-hit the Broncos 13-3.

Alexander (3-6) received the loss after allowing seven runs on three hits and six walks. Keith Thompson and Robbie White combined to finish the final three innings.

Taijeron and Villa led the Broncos who each had two RBI hits for Cal Poly Pomona. Jarrett Attard (3-2) allowed only one earned run (four runs total) over five and one-third innings of work. Joshua Krist picked up his seventh save of the season.

Game two played out the same start for the Seawolves as this time Filippi made his way around to third on a stolen base and wild pitch, then scored on a passed ball to put Sonoma State on top early on.

However, the Broncos wasted no time in establishing a lead as the scored eight unanswered runs through to the seventh.

Cal Poly Pomona put up two runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Taijeron again but up a big bat, hitting jacks in the fifth and seventh innings to extend his CCAA home run lead to 16.

Sonoma State would put up a fight in the final frame. Garrett Gooselaw came in to pinch hit and doubled down the right field line and scored two batters later on a Filippi single. After scoring two more runs, Ryan Stevens ended the game after grounding out to Riedel.

Filippi again commanded the offense going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Brian Wright also went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a few spectacular defensive plays.

Thomas Lee (6-5) received the loss after going fuve innings allowing eight hits, six runs (five earned) and striking out seven.

Taijeron again put up exceptional numbers, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Richard McDowell also went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Geoff Broussard (7-3) went the distance giving up nine hits, four runs and striking out six.

The Seawolves will conclude the regular season on Sunday when they look to avoid the sweep against the Broncos. Before the game, Sonoma State's ten seniors will be honored for the services in Seawolf blue, playing in their final game. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Seawolf Diamond.
