ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State got contributions from up and down the roster on Sunday afternoon on their way to a wild 13-9 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in the series and season finale for both teams. The Seawolves will see their 2010 campaign end with a 24-28, 17-23 CCAA record. The Broncos fall to 26-27, 18-22 CCAA.
On a day where the Seawolves' ten seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony, many of Sonoma's elder statesmen had big games.
Ryan Stevens went 3-for-5 with a home run,
Brian Wright hit his second home run of the season, and
Ken Cook picked up the win in relief.
The game started out as a pitcher's duel between the Broncos' Keith Powers and the Seawolves'
Casey Slate. Sonoma would break through in the third on a solo home run to right center from Steven Fillipi, his second of the series and of the season.
The Broncos answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth before three Sonoma State runs would cross the plate in the bottom of the inning to put the Seawolves up 4-1. Senior
Erik Hansen had a clutch two-out, two-run single in the inning.
The Seawolves' lead would be short-lived as the Broncos again answered with a big five-run inning. After the first five batters got singles to knock Slate out of the game, Cal Poly Pomona would take the lead, 6-4.
In what became a trend for much of the game, the Broncos would see their lead disappear when Sonoma bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Stevens had a three-run home run to spark the offensive output.
Up 8-6, the Seawolves would slip behind in the top of the sixth when Jenzen Torres singled in two runs and Eric Riedel walked with the bases loaded, in the Broncos' very next at bat.
Trailing 9-8 now, the Seawolves finally pushed past the Broncos for good in the bottom of the sixth when
Joey Parigi smashed a big three-run shot to the opposite field (left).
Thanks to some solid relief pitching by
Paul Oules and
Brian Flint, who earned his sixth save of the year, the Seawolves were able to hold on for the victory.
Stevens and Parigi both went 3-for-5 with three-run home runs to pace Sonoma State's offensive attack.
Kyle Jones also had three hits and scored a couple of runs.
Travis Taijeron had three hits to pace the Broncos while Torres led the team with three runs batted in.
Cook earned the victory despite throwing just two-thirds of an inning. John Pollock gave up three in a third of an inning to get tagged with the loss.
Box Score: Sonoma State 13, Cal Poly Pomona 9
