STANFORD, Calif- With just a couple more tuneups before the season opener on Sept. 4 at Fresno Pacific, the Sonoma State men's soccer team traveled to the south bay to take on NCAA Division I Stanford in an exhibition friendly on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves held their own against the Cardinal, who are picked to finish second in the Pac-10 this season, but fell 3-2.
The two squads also played an additional 30 minutes to get some extra playing time, allowing Stanford to add two more goals.
"I was very happy with how we played," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "Stanford has a very good team and although we lost, we were able to move the ball, create chances and score goals".
It didn't take long before the Cardinal grabbed the lead. Just 2:20 into the match, Garrett Gunther beat starting goalkeeper
Juan Sosa to the net for the first score of the game. Less than six minutes later,
Trevor Hurst evened things up with a score of his own, with help from
Justin Ferreira, who was credited with the assist.
Stanford pulled ahead again just over two minutes later and took the 2-1 lead into halftime. Just 22 seconds into the second half, Hurst again converted on a score, but by way of a penalty kick to again knot the score.
The Cardinal scored the go ahead in the 61st minute and held the Seawolves off the board for the remainder of the match. Stanford outshot SSU 17-12 on the day, but the Cardinal added five shots in the extra time.
"We were a little banged up after a hard week of training and the scrimmage with SRJC on Friday," Ziemer added, "but we battled and gave Stanford everything they could handle".
Sosa made four saves between the posts for Sonoma State, who played the regulation 90 minutes. Hurst and
Ebby Lombardi added three shots to lead the Seawolves in that department.
Sonoma State will have one more exhibition test against another Division I program in Saint Mary's. The Seawolves will host the Gaels on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
