ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Despite the narrow advantage in shots, Sonoma State was unable to convert on any of its 12 shots on Sunday, as the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes shutout the Seawolves, 4-0, at Seawolf Soccer Field. SSU falls to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play while the Coyotes remain undefeated in 2010 at 4-0-0 (2-0-0 CCAA).
The Coyotes wasted no time in taking the early lead after Jani Carmona poked a left-footed shot up and over Sonoma State goalkeeper Courtney Grxiti for the 1-0 lead just 2:04 into the match. Both teams played pretty evenly throughout the rest of first half, as the Seawolves held a slight edge in shots at 6-5.
In the second half, the flood gates opened on the Seawolves, as Cal State San Bernardino poured in three goals on just six shots to take control of the ballgame. Carmona added a second goal on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute that secured the 4-0 win. Casey Hirsch and Katie Liby also scored for the Coyotes, both on assists from Unity Beddingfield.
The Seawolves fired 12 shots to the Coyotes' 11, with four coming off the foot of
Sara Studer. Grixti made three saves in the loss as CSUSB netminders Tiffany Mallick and Jessica Mortola combined on a shutout. All four of the Coyotes' saves were stopped by Mallick, who started and played the first 72 minutes.
Sonoma State will look to rebound on Friday when it hosts Cal State East Bay at 1:30 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
