Box Score: Sonoma State 2, Cal State East Bay 0
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State used a relentless attack on the Cal State East Bay defense, peppering both Pioneer goalkeepers with a season-high 32 shots en route to a 2-0 victory on Friday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field. Freshman
Taylor Varnadore and junior
Trevor Hurst each scored goals on Friday, upping their team-high total to five this season.
Sonoma State improves to 4-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play. Cal State East Bay remains winless in the CCAA at 0-3-0 (1-5-0 overall).
"I thought that we played really well today," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said after the match. "We moved the ball with purpose and created a lot of chances. You have to give (Cal State East Bay) credit. They fought to the end. Our defense played really well and worked hard for the shutout."
It took just three minutes, 15 seconds after the opening kickoff for the Seawolves to find the net.
Ebby Lombardi and
Cam Vickers assisted on Varnadore's one-timer into the bottom right corner, just beyond the reach of Pioneer starting netminder Patrick Gilbertson. Another nice cross pass from the right side of the pitch gave Vickers his conference-leading fifth assist of the season. Lombardi was credited with his second of 2010.
A little of seven minutes later, Sonoma State found the net again when Hurst poked a left-footed free kick up and over the Cal State East Bay defensive wall and past Gilbertson for the 2-0 lead.
The Seawolves would continue to dominate the offensive end of the pitch through the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Pioneers 17-2. It would be the same story in the second half as well, as SSU held an astonishing advantage in shots, 32-3 -- four of the 32 shots hit the posts and crossbar, including three in the second half. Gilbertson and backup goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer stayed busy all afternoon, stopping nine Seawolf shots. SSU also held a 13-0 lead in corner kicks.
Thirteen SSU players fired a shot in the match, with eight of them coming off the foot -- and head -- of Varnadore.
Juan Sosa made just one save.
Added Ziemer, "We have a day to recover and then we have a tough game with (UC San Diego) on Sunday. They are always well coached and difficult to beat."
Sonoma State will kick off on Sunday against the Tritons at 2 p.m.
