Box Score: Sonoma State 3, UC San Diego 0
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Kelly Davila scored his first career goal just 42 seconds before halftime and
Ebby Lombardi and
Nico Spann, who also recorded his first-ever goal, added two more en route to a Sonoma State 3-0 victory over UC San Diego on a rainy Sunday at Seawolf Soccer Field. The Seawolves (5-1-0, 3-1-0 CCAA) have won three straight as the Tritons remain winless this season at 0-3-3, 0-2-2 CCAA.
Both teams came out with high emotion and high energy and it look as if neither team would break scoreless tie before halftime. However,
Erick Delgado shook his defender and sent a lob pass into a crowd of people in the penalty box where Davila emerged, heading the ball past the UCSD defenders and into the right side of the net at 44:18.
"The first half was very tough," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "(UC San Diego) did a great job of pressuring us and making it difficult for us to play our game. It took us time to make the necessary adjustments. The goal by
Kelly Davila at the end of the half was crucial because I thought it took a little of the wind out of their sails. I thought that even if we hadn't scored that goal, we would have worn them down in the second half, but it was great to go into halftime with a one goal cushion."
The Seawolves added to the lead at 65:30 after Spann and
Taylor Varnadore combined to find Lombardi at the goalmouth, who launched the ball at point-blank range and into the net.
Added Ziemer, "Our second goal was beautiful.
Ebby Lombardi started the play at midfield and we combined forward with a series of one-touch passes, which ended with him in front of goal and putting it past the keeper."
Just over five minutes later,
Trevor Hurst fired a left-side pass to the left foot of Spann, who converted the Seawolves' third and final goal of the afternoon.
"We have a lot of depth and everybody is training hard and trying to earn time," Ziemer explained. "The healthy competition means that we have a lot of players "in the zone" and involved."
It was the second straight shutout for Sonoma State after earning a 2-0 decision over Cal State East Bay on Friday.
Juan Sosa, the goalkeeper of record in all 540 minutes SSU has played this season made two saves on Sunday, UC San Diego's netminder Jesse Brennan made five saves in his losing effort.
"The defense was great today. They are really coming together," said Ziemer.
Sonoma State will hit the road on Friday for its first conference match away from the friendly confines of Seawolf Soccer Field. The Seawolves will travel to Turlock to take on Cal State Stanislaus at 7 p.m.
Ziemer wrapped up by saying, "We have a huge weekend coming up. We have been getting better every game and even more importantly we have been improving with every practice. We just need to keep taking it one day at a time and be ready for a tough game at (Cal State Stanislaus."
