Seawolves Surrender Late Goal In Loss At Warriors

Cam Vickers scored the Seawolves lone goal on Friday at Warrior Stadium.
Box Score: Cal State Stanislaus 2, #23 Sonoma State 1

TURLOCK, Calif- Cam Vickers sent home a nice shot from 18 yards out to give Sonoma State the early 1-0 lead, but Cal State Stanislaus scored two unanswered goals, including a lazer off the foot of the Warriors' Jio Santana with just over four minutes remaining in regulation to ensure a 2-1 victory on Friday night under the lights at Warrior Stadium. The 23rd-ranked Seawolves fall to 5-2-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play. The Warriors improve to 3-1-1 in the CCAA (4-1-2 overall).

"I thought that we played very well and controlled the game during long stretches of the first and second half, but we started giving the ball away too easily and we lost control of the game," head coach Marcus Ziemer said. "(Cal State Stanislaus) play direct and tried to play off of our mistakes and we needed to keep possession and control the game. At the end of each half we started to give the ball away and the game turned into a little out of control, which played right into their game plan."

Vickers controlled a pass from Ebby Lombardi, who lobbed the ball from the far side of the field, where he ran in behind the defense and put his shot past Warrior netminder Javier Rosales at 21:08.

Cal State Stanislaus scored the equalizer six minutes before halftime when Nolan Holdridge fired a throw in from the sideline, dropping the ball right at the feet of Andres Zamora, who hammered his shot past Sonoma State goalkeeper Juan Sosa at 38:46.

The Seawolves had a slim advantage in shots after the opening 45 minutes of play, 6-5, and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

For most of the second half, Sonoma State dominated the offensive end of the field, despite tough resistance by Warrior defenders. SSU led 9-5 in shots in the second half, but Santana's goal at 85:56 took the wind out of the Seawolves sails and gave Cal State Stanislaus the 2-1 victory.

""We never gave up," Ziemer added. "Even after they scored we kept pushing and had several good chances in the last few minutes. You have to give (Cal State Stanislaus) credit, because at the end of the day, the amount of ball possession means nothing. The point of the game is to score goals and win games and tonight they did that."

It was only the fifth time under Marcus Ziemer that Sonoma State lost to the Warriors, as the Seawolves fall to 26-5-3 over Cal State Stanislaus in the past 20 seasons.

"We have to bounce back on Sunday at Chico," said Ziemer. "Everybody in the conference has at least one loss so things are wide open and there is still a lot of soccer to be played."

Sonoma State will head north to Chico to face 20th-ranked Chico State on Sunday at University Soccer Stadium. Kick off is set for 11:30 a.m. The Seawolves will then return home next Friday to host Cal State Monterey Bay at 4 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
