Box Score: Cal State Stanislaus 1, Sonoma State 0
TURLOCK, Calif- All it took was one unfortunate bounce in the wrong direction that dealt Sonoma State its third conference loss of the season. The Seawolves held the Warriors scoreless for 82 plus minutes, but a cross in front of the goal by the Warriors' Marissa Dunaway deflected off a Seawolf defender and up and over goalkeeper
Courtney Grixti, handing Cal State Stanislaus the 1-0 victory at Warrior Stadium on Friday evening.
The Seawolves fell to 1-3-2 overall and remain winless in conference play at 0-3-2. The Warriors remain atop the North Division standings at 4-1-0 (6-1-0 overall).
At 82:39, Cal State Stanislaus gained control of the ball and headed downfield into Sonoma State territory. Alexia Poon sent a pass to Dunaway sprinting down the left side of the field, who then crossed the ball to another Warrior attacker on the near post. However, the ball bounced off the leg of a SSU defender, catching Grixti off-balance, which allowed the ball to get up and over her outstretched arms and into the net.
On offense, the Seawolves could not get much going, firing just five shots in the contest, three of which were saved by Stanislaus netminder Millie Brown. The Warriors held the advantage in that department, attempting 20 shots. Grixti came up huge on more than several occasions, though, tying a career-high with 10 saves -- most of which were diving plays.
The scoreless draught remains, as Sonoma State hasn't found the net in 490 minutes, 26 seconds -- the fifth straight match without a goal, a school record.
Sonoma State will head to Chico on Sunday to take on Chico State at 2 p.m. before returning home next Friday to host Cal State Monterey Bay at 1 :30 p.m.
