CHICO, Calif- The Sonoma State offense again fell flat on Sunday, and the defense allowed four first half goals by Chico State as the host Wildcats grabbed a convincing 4-0 victory over the Seawolves on Sunday at University Soccer Stadium in Chico. It is the sixth consecutive game that Sonoma State has been held scoreless, falling to 0-4-2 in CCAA play and 1-4-2 overall. Chico State improves to 5-3-0 and 4-2-0.
Chico State punched one into the net at 14:05 when Kasey Wall redirected a Kelsey Ikemoto shot at the far post and into the net for the early 1-0 lead. Two minutes and 35 seconds later, the Wildcats found the net again when Ashley Pealman rebounded a Lisa Webster shot and poked it past SSU starting goalkeeper
Courtney Grixti to go up 2-0.
Just 50 seconds later, Chico State began putting the match out of Sonoma State's reach with its third goal of the day -- another rebounded shot, this time by Denni Jo Berger after an attempt by Ikemoto at 17:30. The fourth and final goal of the afternoon came at 36:19 on a score by Melissa Pease, deflating the Seawolf squad.
Attempting just 10 shots in the last two matches, Sonoma State was outshot 12-5 in the contest on Sunday, two of which came off the foot of
Allison Kern.
Grixti made three saves before being replaced by
Alexis Sciacqua, who made her first appearance of the season. Sciacqua made one save. The offense for Sonoma State has almost disappeared this season, as the Seawolves have been held scoreless for the last 580 minutes and 26 seconds, a school record.
Sonoma State will return home for its next four matches, beginning with Friday's battle with Cal State Monterey Bay. Kick off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
