Box Score: Humboldt State 61, Sonoma State 56
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- A furious comeback in the final minute gave Sonoma State a chance to pull even when
Jaclyn Bisordi popped back for a three-pointer with six seconds remaining, but her shot was stuffed by Humboldt State's Kayla Williams, securing an eventual 61-56 victory for the visiting Lumberjacks. The loss is the sixth in seven games for the Seawolves as they fall to 4-6, 2-4 CCAA. With the win, Humboldt (7-4, 4-3) secures a season split following a home loss to Sonoma in November.
Sonoma State led for most of the first half as it jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Humboldt State remained close, though, and grabbed a 12-11 lead on a three pointer by Lisa Petty at the 10:12 mark. The lead was short-lived when
Aly Conway scored on an and-one play a couple of possessions later. HSU tied it up at 14-14 before the Seawolves would jump out to its largest lead of the game at 22-16 with 6:33 left in the opening period.
However, the visiting 'Jacks would enjoy a 11-2 run to close out the final four and a half minutes of the half to lead 27-24, heading into the locker room at the intermission.
Just as they did to start the game, the Seawolves opened up the half with five straight points to lead 29-27, but the Lumberjacks reeled off 11 unanswered points to grab a big nine-point lead, 38-29, with 14:37 to play. The lead eventually climbed to 12 points at 56-44 with 3:42 left.
During the next three minutes, Sonoma State would begin chipping away at HSU's largest lead of the game, pulling to within one point after a three-pointer by
Kristina Fahey with 18 seconds remaining, capping a 12-1 run to trail 57-56. Two free throws on Humboldt's next possession put the 'Jacks up three.
After a Humboldt State timeout, Sonoma State came down the floor and set Bisordi up for the equalizer, but Williams' block ended the threat and Humboldt added two more free throws with just four seconds left to seal the deal.
Conway was the only SSU player in double figures, dropping in 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. The Seawolves dominated the glass despite the loss, outrebounding the Lumberjacks 42-28, including 14 offensive rebounds. Fahey added nine points and three others, including Bisordi, scored eight points.
Humboldt State's Petty and Jeanette DeWitt led the visitors with 14 points and Bree Halsey corralled seven rebounds.
Sonoma State will look to get back on track on Thursday when it hosts Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den.
