Aly Henington scored a game-high 19 points and
Taylor Vigil corralled a career-high 12 rebounds, but the Sonoma State women's basketball team surrendered a 24-20 halftime lead and fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills 55-52 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball action on Friday night at the Torodome in Carson.
The Seawolves fall to 5-10 overall and 3-8 in conference play. The Toros earned their first home victory of the season and improved to 3-12 on the season (3-8 CCAA).
Starting the game off strong, the Seawolves sprinted to an early 13-4 lead in the opening nine minutes of the game. The Toros countered back, though, and went on a 11-4 run to come within two points at 17-15. It would be as close as they would get in the first half, as SSU lead by four at halftime, 24-20.
The game went back and forth, but it was Sonoma State who jumped back out to a nine point lead (39-30) with 13:52 left in regulation. Mirroring the first half, Cal State Dominguez Hills got right back into the game, scoring the next 10 points to grab a 40-39 lead with under ten minutes to play. Each team would trade baskets, but an
Aly Conway layup with just 46 seconds left would put the Seawolves up two at 52-50.
It would be the last points Sonoma State would score, as Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped in the last five points of the game -- a three pointer by Nikki Boutte and two free throws by Sherrie Hughes -- secured the 55-52 win for the Toros.
Neither team shot particularly well from the floor, as both teams shot under 30 percent. SSU hit 15 of 54 shots (27.8 percent) and CSUDH converted only 16 of 57 (28.1 percent). Both teams combined for 88 rebounds, with the Seawolves holding the slight 47-41 advantage on the glass. Vigil led all players with 12 boards and
Kristina Fahey had 10 points and nine rebounds, just one rebound short of her first career double-double.
Boutte led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 16 points and Tiffany Smith chipped in with 15.
Sonoma State, who has lost six of its last seven, will take on Cal State L.A. on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the Eagles Nest.
