Seawolves Come Up Just Short Against Tritons

BOX SCORE:  UC San Diego 58, Sonoma State 54

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  An encouraging performance against a perennial west region power just wasn't enough on Thursday night as Sonoma State dropped a 58-54 decision to UC San Diego in CCAA women's hoops action at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.  The result wraps up a season sweep for the Tritons and sends the Seawolves to 6-11, 4-9 CCAA on the season.  UCSD goes to 11-9, 9-4 CCAA.

Aly Conway had a big night for the Seawolves, grabbing 15 rebounds (11 of them off the offensive glass) and blocking four shots.  The 15 rebounds were the most by an SSU player since 2007 (Lauren Redfield) and the four blocks were the most since 1997 (Anne Baxter).

While UC San Diego would lead for most of the game, they were unable to ever really shake off the pesty Seawolves.  Many times the Tritons would surge to a six to ten point lead, only to see Sonoma erase the lead on a couple of successful trips down the floor.

The Seawolves would only lead the game twice, late in the first half and midway through the second when a Taylor Vigil layup put SSU up 43-41.  From that basket at the 11:13 mark, the Seawolves would go ice cold, stuck on 43 for nearly ten minutes.  Finally, Aly Henington would break the scoreless slide with a three-pointer to keep SSU's hopes alive.

An off-balance three-pointer by Roxanne Rentschler with 23 seconds left gave Sonoma their last bit of excitement, cutting the lead to just three at 54-51, but UCSD would convert four consecutive free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Points at the free throw line were really the difference in the game.  Both teams had seven three-pointers and Sonoma State actually made more field goals than UC San Diego, 22-18.  However, UCSD held a commanding 15-3 lead in free throws made.  The Tritons hit 15-of-17 attempts while the Seawolves converted just three of their five freebies.

Henington would pace the Seawolves with 15 points on the night while Vigil came up with another solid all-around performance with ten points, four rebounds, and a game-high five assists.

Chelsea Carlisle and Emily Osga each had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead UC San Diego.

The Seawolves will now turn their sights to Cal State East Bay.  The Pioneers invade The Wolves' Den for a 5:30 game on Saturday evening.
