Box Score: Cal State East Bay 67, Sonoma State 46
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-
Jaclyn Bisordi scored 18 points and
Aly Conway had another big night on the glass, but Sonoma State surrendered a 21-4 run to Cal State East Bay over the final eight minutes, allowing the Pioneers to pull away for a stunning 67-46 victory over the Seawolves on Saturday evening at The Wolves' Den. Sonoma State (6-12, 4-10 CCAA) has now fallen in four of its last five games while the Pioneers (2-16, 2-12 CCAA) earned just their second win of the season.
The visitors got off to a fast start, taking a 15-7 lead eight minutes into the ballgame. Sonoma State would stay close with Cal State East Bay, though, thanks to four first-half three-pointers by Bisordi. A free throw by
Taylor Vigil at the five minute mark of the opening half gave the Seawolves their first lead of the game, but it would be short-lived as the Pioneers scored seven of the first half's last nine points to take a narrow 32-29 lead into the break.
Bisordi had a huge first half, dropping in 16 points on 5 of 9 shooting, including the aforementioned four three-pointers. She led the Seawolves to a 38.5 shooting percentage (10 of 26). Cal State East Bay, meanwhile, had a slight upper hand from the floor, hitting 12 of 29 shots (41.4 percent).
It was a tale of two halves, though, despite the fact that Sonoma State kept Cal State East Bay within at least eight points for much of the second half. A three-pointer by
Oly Larkin with 8:17 remaining in the game, got the Seawolves to within four points at 46-42. From that point on, SSU would hit just one more field goal -- a layup by
Amrallina Rowland with ten seconds left in the game -- which would be the tail-end of a massive 21-4 run by the Pioneers to sprint away with the victory.
The Seawolves would hit just six shots on 38 attempts in the final period (15.8 percent), ending with a 25 percent clip from the floow (16 of 64).
Aly Conway had another big night on the boards, marking the second straight game she recorded double-digit rebounds (12), eight of which came on the offensive glass. Vigil ended the night with nine points and three assists.
For Cal State East Bay, Maria Dinesen led all scorers with 21 points and teammate Lauren Lucchesi added 13. Marlene MacMillan, the CCAA's third-best rebounder, corralled a game-high 13 in the victory.
Sonoma State will look to shake its two-game skid when the Seawolves host Chico State on Thursday night at The Wolves' Den. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
