BOX SCORE ARCATA, Calif- Sonoma State pulled to within a point in the final two minutes, but Humboldt State converted their free throws down the stretch as the Lumberjacks defeated the Seawolves 57-54 in the CCAA opener for both teams on Saturday evening in Arcata. The Seawolves got 10 points from
Aly Henington as they drop to 1-1, 0-1 CCAA on the season. The 'Jacks stay unbeaten at 4-0, 1-0 CCAA.
In just their second game of the regular season, the Seawolves opened up conference play earlier than they ever had before.
Sonoma got the upper hand early on Saturday, jetting to a 9-2 lead in the first six and a half minutes. The lead would be pushed to eight at 13-5 just inside the ten minute mark in the first half, before Humboldt began chipping away, eventually drawing even with the Seawolves (28-28) at the half.
The Seawolves would score the first five points of the second half, but shortly thereafter, an 11-2 Lumberjack run would put Humboldt on top.
The 'Jacks took a 48-44 lead at the 8:36 mark before both teams endured a cold spell that saw nearly five minutes elapse before either team would score.
Trailing by five with under two minutes to go, the Seawolves would get back-to-back buckets from
Jaclyn Bisordi to draw within a point at 53-52 with 1:17 remaining.
After a couple of missed shots by Humboldt State, the Seawolves got the ball back, only to turn it over with 17 seconds left. A pair of Humboldt free throws pushed the lead back to three before the Seawolves pulled to within one on a put back by
Aly Henington. The bucket came, however, with just one second left and a pair of Humboldt State free throws ended the game at 57-54.
Henington paced the Seawolves with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Bisordi added nine and
Marie Sweet pitched in with eight points and a team-high six rebounds. The Seawolves shot 41.1% from the field on the night.
The Lumberjacks got 15 points from Lisa Petty and 10 from Lexxi Price.
Sonoma State will continue CCAA play next Friday when they travel to Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay.
