BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif-
Elizabeth Day scored a career-high 19 points on 9 of 10 shooting, but Sonoma State surrendered a 15-point lead in the final 11 minutes of regulaton and it took overtime for Cal State Monterey Bay to complete the comeback, as the Otters defeated the Seawolves, 64-59, on Saturday night at the Otter Sports Center in Seaside. SSU drops to 2-2 this season and 1-2 in the CCAA, while CSUMB improves to 4-1 (2-0 in conference play).
It was a back and forth battle in the opening ten minutes of a contest, as both teams combined for three ties and five lead changes. However, Sonoma State began to make its move, eventually sprinting out to a ten-point lead at 29-19 with 1:22 remaining before halftime.
It looked as if the Seawolves would hold that lead at the intermission, but the Otters' Erika Ward hit a three-pointer at the buzzer and was fouled simultaneously. She hit the ensuing free throw to put Cal State Monterey Bay down just six points (29-23) heading into the locker room.
It was all Sonoma State to open the second period, as
Jaclyn Bisordi hit a pair of three-pointers and Day and
Bronte Sheahan added a couple of jump shots to open with a 10-0 run to lead by 16 points at 39-23.
Cal State Monterey Bay finally scored to end the 10-0 run by SSU, but 5:48 into the half. Bisordi would put the Seawolves up by 16 again (41-25) with a jumper at the 13:52 mark, but the Otters started to chip away. A Day jumper gave SSU a 15-point advantage (45-30) with 10:50 on the clock before CSUMB scored 16 unanswered points over a span of seven minutes to take the lead at 46-45. Both teams would again trade buckets and Day would give Sonoma State a two-point lead at 53-51 with 37 seconds on the game clock.
On Cal State Monterey Bay's next possession, the Otters held for the final shot and Brandi Stephens was fouled on her attempt to knot the game. After her first free throw bounced off the rim twice before finally falling through the net, Stephens swished the second and Sonoma State held the inbounds pass to take the game to overtime.
Marie Sweet gave the Seawolves an early lead with a jumper at the 4:45 mark, but the Otters scored the next seven points to lead by five at 60-55 on a three-pointer by Erika Ward. The teams would scratch and claw while again trading made shots, but a pair of Otter free throws with five seconds left put CSUMB up five at 64-59, essentially ending the game.
The Seawolves, who shot better than 50 percent for the majority of the game, ended with a 48.1 percent clip from the field on 25 of 52 shooting, much of which came from the 9 of 10 output by Day. However, SSU hit only three of the eight shots attempted in the extra period while CSUMB hit 3 of 6. Bisordi ended the night with 16 points, hitting the only two three-pointers for SSU on Saturday.
Taylor Vigil corralled a team-high nine boards as the Seawolves outrebounded the Otters 39-31 (38-24 in regulation).
For the Otters, Stephens came off the bench to lead all players with 25 points, including 11 of them from the free throw line (11 for 11). Ward chipped in with 15 points and Jessica Fontenette netted 10 points.
Sonoma State will step away from conference play next weekend when it heads up to Seattle, Wash. to compete in the annual CCAA/GNAC Challenge, hosted this year by Seattle Pacific. The Seawolves will face host SPU on Friday (7:00 p.m.) before taking on Western Washington on Saturday (5:00 p.m.), both at Brougham Pavilion on the campus of Seattle Pacific University.
