Box Score: Sonoma State 1, Biola 0
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Stellar pitching and a couple of timely hits resulted in a 1-0 victory for Sonoma State over visiting Biola in the opener of a two-game non-conference baseball series at Seawolf Diamond on Friday afternoon.
O'Koyea Dickson provided the game-winning run when he knocked in Steven Fillipi in the eighth inning to keep the Seawolves perfect at 4-0 on the season. The the Eagles drop to 3-4.
Friday's matchup was a pitcher's duel from the start as Sonoma starter
Thomas Lee and Biola starter Nick Turner brought their best stuff.
The first good opportunity to score came in the fourth inning when Biola's Mac Sullivan and Brent Opdyke singled with two outs, but Lee was able to induce a comebacker to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Seawolves had a similar chance in the sixth when back-to-back errors with two outs put a couple of runners on, but Turner struck out
Randy Wells to end the threat.
Sonoma would get a runner to third in the seventh with just one out, but again Turner wiggled out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
The game's only run finally came in the eighth when Fillipi greeted Biola reliever Kyle Atkins (0-1) with a single to right field to lead off the inning. Following a perfect sacrifice bunt from
Kevin Cramer, Dickson poked one through to right field and the throw home was high, allowing Fillipi to slide in safely.
The Seawolves got another single and a walk to load the bases following the run, but Atkins forced
Cameron Cook into a double play to limit the damage to just one.
Biola wouldn't go down without a fight in the ninth as pinch hitter Josh Burket singled to lead off the frame. However,
Ian Ocon and
Joey Van Cleave left him on the basepaths with a couple of strikeouts and a popout.
Ocon (1-0) was credited with the win after allowing just one hit and one walk in 2 1/3 innings. Van Cleave earned the save. Lee went six innings and allowed just three hits while striking out four.
Turner's final line was equally impressive: seven innings, three hits, two walks, no runs and six strikeouts.
Dickson and Fillipi each had two hits to lead the Seawolves' six hit attack. Four different players had a single hit for Biola.
The series will conclude tomorrow with a single game, starting at 11:00 am.
