Sonoma Moves To 5-0 With Saturday Win Over Biola

Garrett Schwartz had two RBI singles on Saturday.
Box Score:  Sonoma State 6, Biola 5

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Freshman Garrett Schwartz drove in two runs, including the eventual game-winner, as Sonoma State edged Biola 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.  The Seawolves complete a two-game sweep of the Eagles with both wins coming by a single run as they improve to 5-0 on the season.  Biola falls to 3-5.

Like in Friday's 1-0 series opener, Saturday's contest had the makings of a pitcher's duel early on.  The Seawolves would finally break through when Schwartz singled home O'Koyea Dickson in the fourth to make it 1-0.

Biola would be quick to answer, scoring three times in the top of the fifth on an error and RBI doubles by Mac Sullivan and Garrett Leon.

Not to be outdone, Sonoma State rallied in their half of the inning for five runs to catapult back in front, 6-4.  Following walks to Kyle Cerrudo and Steven Fillipi, Dickson singled to right to score the first of the runs.  The next hitter, Kyle Jones, then laced a single to left center to plate a pair.  Following an error that allowed pinch runner Kyle Kearney to score, Schwartz singled to drive in Randy Wells

That final run proved to be big as the Eagles answered right back with a run in the top of the sixth when Drake Fages scored on a nice bunt by Johnny Farrington.

Biola would out hit Sonoma State 11-5, but they left the field frustrated, as 11 baserunners were stranded.

Kendall Davis pitched three one-hit innings to lead a quintet of Seawolves on the mound.  Joshua Nervis picked up the win with an inning a third turn while Jacob Fiss and Jayson Richards skillfully silenced the Eagle bats in the final three frames.

Kevin Ryan went four and a third for Biola, surrenduring three runs on just one hit.  He walked four batters while striking out six.  Bobby O'Neill drew the loss after getting tagged for three runs and four hits in a third of an inning.

Schwartz was the lone Seawolf with more than one hit, finishing 2-for-3.  Dickson scored twice and Jones drove in two.

Mac Sullivan and Garrett Leon each had three hits for Biola.  Drake Fages added a pair.

Following five straight wins to start out the season at home, the Seawolves will now hit the road for eight straight in CCAA play.  The roadtrip gets started next Friday in Carson against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
